Why I Founded GC Strategies Legal and Consulting Services—and Why Fractional General Counsel Is the Future of Business Growth

What if you could have an experienced General Counsel sitting at your executive table—helping you manage risk, negotiate contracts, navigate compliance, and support growth—without the cost of hiring a full-time in-house attorney?

That question is at the heart of one of the fastest-growing movements in the legal profession: Fractional General Counsel services.

While many business owners are just beginning to hear the term, the business model has been evolving for more than two decades. Emerging from the broader outsourcing and fractional executive movement of the late 1990s and early 2000s, companies began seeking ways to access high-level expertise without committing to the expense of full-time executive hires. As fractional CFOs, COOs, and HR executives became increasingly common, legal leadership naturally followed.

Today, Fractional General Counsel is no longer an emerging concept. It is a strategic solution that is transforming how businesses access legal leadership.

Why Fractional General Counsel Services Are Trending

In my conversations with business leaders, I consistently hear the same challenge:

“We need legal guidance, but we're not ready for a full-time General Counsel.”

At the same time, business owners are operating in an environment that is more complex than ever before. Regulatory requirements are increasing. Contracts are becoming more sophisticated. Employment issues, intellectual property concerns, governance matters, and risk management challenges continue to expand. Yet many organizations simply do not have the budget for a traditional in-house legal department.

This is precisely why Fractional General Counsel services have gained momentum.

Businesses today are looking for:

  • Strategic legal guidance

  • Predictable legal costs

  • Executive-level decision support

  • Proactive risk management

  • Flexible access to legal leadership

It is important to note that a Fractional General Counsel is fundamentally different from keeping a traditional law firm on retainer. While outside law firms typically bill by the hour to react to specific, isolated legal problems, a Fractional GC sits directly inside your executive team—proactively aligning legal strategy with day-to-day business operations.

Instead of calling a lawyer only when a crisis occurs, companies are recognizing the value of having a trusted legal advisor integrated into their leadership team.

The Cost-Saving Advantage

One of the greatest benefits of the fractional model is cost efficiency.

For many small and mid-sized businesses, hiring a full-time General Counsel can be financially unrealistic. Between salary, benefits, bonuses, and overhead, the investment can be substantial.

Fractional General Counsel services provide access to experienced legal leadership at a fraction of that cost. Businesses receive the strategic support they need while maintaining flexibility and controlling expenses.

More importantly, proactive legal guidance often helps organizations avoid costly mistakes before they occur.

A well-negotiated contract. A compliance issue identified early. A governance structure established correctly. A business risk addressed before it becomes litigation.

These are the moments where legal strategy creates measurable business value.

Why I Founded GC Strategies Legal and Consulting Services

The launch of GC Strategies Legal and Consulting Services was the culmination of nearly 25 years of practicing law, serving in executive leadership positions, advising organizations, and helping clients navigate some of their most significant legal and business challenges.

Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of serving as a Presidential appointee within one of the largest General Counsel offices in the nation, General Counsel for a national property management company, and General Counsel for a large public housing authority. These experiences allowed me to develop a unique understanding of leadership, governance, compliance, risk management, and strategic decision-making at the highest levels.

Licensed to practice law in Georgia, Ohio, Maryland, and the District of Columbia, I work across industries and jurisdictions while helping organizations solve increasingly complex legal challenges.

After two decades in executive leadership, one truth became clear: businesses don't just need an attorney.

They need a strategic thought partner.

They need someone who understood that every contract, policy, regulatory requirements, and operational decision impact growth.

They need someone who could connect legal strategy with business strategy.

That realization inspired me to create GC Strategies Legal and Consulting Services — a firm tailored specifically for scaling companies (typically between 10 and 200 employees, or $2M to $30M in revenue) that have outgrown ad-hoc legal advice, but aren't ready for full-time legal department payroll.

A Different Approach to Legal Leadership

At GC Strategies, I do more than provide legal answers. I help organizations think strategically about where they are today and where they want to be tomorrow.

My practice is built on the belief that legal counsel should be:

  • Practical

  • Forward-thinking

  • Business-focused

  • Cost-effective

  • Results-oriented

Whether advising on complex real estate transactions, contract negotiations, business formation, administrative proceedings, governance matters, or growth strategies, my goal is to help clients build strong legal foundations that support long-term success.

As a Harvard Business School Executive Leadership-certified professional, former elected official, author, and advocate, I bring perspectives that extend beyond traditional legal analysis. I understand that successful organizations require more than legal compliance—they require leadership, vision, and strategic execution.

The Future Belongs to Businesses That Plan Ahead

The most successful organizations are not waiting for legal problems to appear before seeking guidance.

They are investing in strategic partnerships that help them identify opportunities, manage risk, and position themselves for sustainable growth.

That is why Fractional General Counsel services continue to gain momentum across the country. Businesses are recognizing that having access to experienced legal leadership is no longer a luxury reserved for large corporations—it is a competitive advantage available to organizations of every size.
